Empowering Girls Through Dignity

Hon. Rahab Mukami Wachira, the Woman Representative for Nyeri County, has continued to champion the health and dignity of girls through her ongoing Sanitary Towels Distribution Program under the Mukami Maendeleo Mashinani initiative.

The program seeks to ensure that no girl misses school or loses confidence due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products. Through this effort, Hon. Mukami has reached thousands of school-going and out-of-school girls across the county — giving them not just sanitary towels, but also hope, education, and empowerment.

“Every girl deserves to attend school with dignity and confidence. Menstruation should never be a reason for girls to stay at home. By providing sanitary towels, we are not just giving them products — we are giving them opportunity and hope,”
said Hon. Mukami during one of the distribution events.

The program has been implemented in partnership with schools, community-based organizations, and women’s groups. Beyond distribution, girls are also educated on menstrual hygiene management, reproductive health, and self-care. Out-of-school youth, including teenage mothers and vocational trainees, have also benefited from the initiative.

Teachers and parents have lauded the program, noting a positive impact on school attendance and girls’ confidence.

“Since the program began, our girls are more consistent in school and feel supported,” remarked a teacher from Tetu Sub-county.

This initiative aligns with Hon. Mukami’s broader vision of empowering women and girls through health, education, and economic opportunities. Plans are underway to collaborate with local enterprises and social innovators to promote sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions, including reusable sanitary pads and community-based production projects.

Through her leadership, Hon. Rahab Mukami Wachira continues to reaffirm her commitment to uplifting the girl child and fostering a community where every young woman can thrive with dignity and confidence.
